On Saturday, August 22, 2009, with spectators hollering out “fire in the hole!,” an oil well in Bradford, Pennsylvania was “shot” as part of the Bradford Oil 150 celebration.
The world’s first commercial oil well was drilled in not-too-far-away Titusville in 1859. Bradford became a huge oil town in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The Bradford Era newspaper still declares the town to be “The High Grade Oil Metropolis of the World.”
This oil well is on Bradford School District property and will be a working well that is used to teach schoolchildren about the oil industry. It was drilled more than 1,400 feet deep.
