Ever wonder why John McCain wants to drill for oil off of our coasts so badly? It’s not to help gas prices; he knows it won’t help at all in the short-term, especially not when we have a clear need to get off of oil forever. There’s a bipartisan coalition growing that understands we need to get off oil. But John McCain wants to dig us even deeper in the oil well, harming the environment and making us less secure in our energy needs.
So why does he want to do this, when the reality of the situation demonstrates what a terrible idea it is? I’ll give you 29 guesses.

Leverett, senior fellow at The New America Foundation, argued that control of commodities and scarce energy reserves will be the defining paradigm in the global economy for years to come. Increased energy demand throughout the developing world and a tight supply have created a structural shift in global energy markets that has rendered past boom-bust cycles obsolete for the foreseeable future. One notable structural shift constraining supply is that 80% of oil reserves are owned by governments as opposed to multinational private corporations. As a result, market forces do not play a role in inducing additional productive capacity.
He also pointed to institutions and relationships that have accompanied the growth of the World Without the West. Multilateral institutions such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization have begun to compete with traditional multilateral organizations for regional influence. These developments are part of the larger phenomenon of the developing world soft balancing U.S. power.

If we’re addicted to oil, our twelve-step program should begin with admitting that we have a problem. As the price of oil creeps higher, finding new energy sources is more important than ever. But the search for alternatives, combined with environmental disruptions, is putting new pressures on other essentials like food. There are some things that are going well in the world. Right now, the economy is not one of them.

Jim Lehrer is the anchor and executive editor of PBSs The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. He came to Washington with PBS in 1972, teaming with Robert MacNeil in 1973 to cover the Senate Watergate hearings. They began in 1975 what became The MacNeil/Lehrer Report, and, in 1983, The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour, the first 60-minute evening news program on television. When MacNeil retired in 1995, the program was renamed The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Lehrer has been honored with numerous awards for journalism, including a presidential National Humanities Medal in 1999. In the last five presidential elections, he moderated ten of the nationally televised candidate debates. Lehrer has written 16 novels. His latest, The Phony Marine, was published in November 2006. He also has written two memoirs and three plays. His 17th novel, Eureka, will be published in fall 2007.
Peter J. Robertson is vice chairman of the board of directors for Chevron Corp., responsible for strategic planning, policy, government and public affairs, human resources, and corporate compliance. Previously, he directed the companys worldwide exploration, production, and global gas businesses. He was president of Chevron Overseas Petroleum Inc., president of Chevron USA, and president of Warren Petroleum Co., Chevrons former natural gas liquids subsidiary. He chairs the US Energy ociation and is a past director of Sasol Chevron Holdings Ltd., Dynegy Inc., and Caltex Petroleum Corp. A native of Edinburgh, Scotland, he graduated from Edinburgh University and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
