What is hydraulic oil used for in tractors?

I have to find out what hydraulic oil/fluid is used for in a tractor? anyone any simple answers that i will understand? and what will happen if there is no oil? what effect will this have on the tractor?

ok any quality tractor built since the 60’s has a dual hydrauli`c system.one system is used to lube the transmission and rear gears and pto thru shaft, the other is a pressure system with remote couplings for operating rams, and the 3 point lift and in most cases power steering and brakes.the trans sump is where the hydraulic systems oil is stored.the case 7140 holds well over 20 gallons.they will have a steel manifold that has lube lines that actually bathe gears in the oil.also the clutches are hydraulic powered.old school ran a pump on the front of the engine with a seperate resevoir, but if the had a 3 point, they generally used tractor hyd. fluid, or universal goof froof.some heavy equipment actually uses motor oil in the hyd system, like the 9960 john deere cotton picker.

Im not a farmer by any meens, and never even sat on a tractor, But I believe the hydraulic fluid is used for the PTO drive shaft thing, and used for other atachments like mowing blades, back hoes and things of that nature. I know they have a hydraulic on the rear to lift and lower attachments.

It is used in the tractors hydraulic system in the front and rear end loaders for lifting things like Hay Bales etc EDIT-If there is no hydraulic oil in the hydraulic system then the hydraulic system won’t work because there is no pressure being created to generate power to the auxilliary items. The tractors engine will still run because it doesnt use hydraulic oil.

most tractors have front, rear, or both areas where hydaulic attachments may be mounted. if there is no fluid the hydraulic pump will burn up as it uses the fluid for lubrication as it runs. ( pump normaly bolted directly to crank shaft). no effect on the tractor motor or transmisson itself. but will limit the tractors usefulness.

To move the hydraulic actuators used on most tractors. These actuators allow small forces to be magnified. That’s why tractors can move very heavy loads. If there is no oil, these actuators will not work and the tractor will be a disabled "beast".

P.S. hydraulic fluid is not use to lubricate. It’s like brake fluid – it does NOT lubricate the car.

The hydraulic system takes power from an engine-driven pump and provides it to equipment fitted to the tractor, such as loader bucket, tipping ram on a trailer etc. (Not all equipment is powered this way, some runs from the power take off shaft). If there is no fluid then this equipment won’t work, plus the pump itself will be damaged from running "dry".

The advantage to hydraulics as opposed to mechanical power provision is that you don’t have to line up drive-shafts etc., just connect hoses (which are obviously flexible).

hydraulic fluid would be used in any power takeoff device installed to the tractor

and if the tractor runs out of oil, well the motor locks up

It’s used for safety.most tractors have front, rear, or both areas where hydraulic attachments may be mounted. if there is no fluid the hydraulic pump will burn up as it uses the fluid for lubrication as it runs.

Look at the website for Morris Oils of Shrewsbury. Ring them if in doubt. You might also be interested in their low prices, considering their appropriate motor oil is formally approved by Mercedes Benz……..

i mantained a large farm fleet for 11 yrs. these days, if you run low on oil, most systems are disabled to keep from burning anything up.see tractors have been running limp mode since the late 80’s that i know of.

for operating machenary, oil pipes connect to rams and stuff to operate them, if no oil it wouldnt work oviously
