Why do people associate oil wells with environmental destruction?

We are currently drilling for oil in Beverly Hills, CA yet there are tens of thousands of people that live there. If drilling for oil causes such destruction, how could this be?

Because they are ignorant and don’t understand modern drilling techniques.

I think the big point is where the drilling is happening. There is already so much modernized in the beverly hills area that the only things that might be risked are housing prices. Whereas if we drill in ANWR, we’re talking about possibly seriously messing up an undisturbed wild ecosystem. THAT, has massive environmental consequences. Not ALL oil wells, just some.

There are water reserves and water running underneath the earth too, not just on top. The drilling lets the oil seep into the waters and spread.

The enviros always do worst case scenario. Helps keep those donations coming in. The Sierra Club is a prime example of that. I got a kick out of a group that started up to razz them: The Sahara Club.

Maybe because drilling for oil more often than not devastates the local area, the pipeline/shipping routes, and never, ever gets cleaned up by the greedy oil companies.
