Currently there are 1771 drilling rigs working in the US and about another 600 in Canada. The number of rigs varies with season, but overall has remained fairly constant oner the last 20 years or so. It has lots do do with oil and natural gas prices, and investment climate.

A few. But they run into so many problems from eco nuts it is a very small industry.
The next big oil patch, the frozen no mans land of ANWR is off limits due to sniveling from ecos.
